More than meets the eye . . . The custom sofa

Sometimes a project needs that perfect piece that cannot be found in a store – even a specialist store.  The required dimensions, appearance, function, and so on, might be that little bit particular or unusual.  Luckily, bespoke – custom made – items can be designed and created to meet almost any project or client need.  Bespoke pieces mean there is no need for the client to compromise on any aspect of their project.  The piece will meet their needs exactly, and as these items are often purpose-crafted, they have a level of quality unmatched by mass-produced items.  And, of course, there is also a particular pleasure that comes with owning a one-of-a-kind piece that so perfectly enhances your home.

Over the years, I have commissioned hundreds of bespoke pieces for clients – everything from staircases, doors, and kitchen fittings to tables, light fittings, beds (upholstered bedheads and bases), and, perhaps most commonly, sofas.

Custom sofas are not as uncommon as you might expect. It is, however, an intricate process involving lots of consideration and thoughtful design.  Every element – from comfort through to aesthetic – is considered and customised, so that the client gets exactly the sofa they desire.

In some cases, a custom sofa’s designed is created by combining different features from a range of different sofas in a catalogue, however, in others the sofa is designed from scratch.

The image below is one of my recent custom sofas.  Just from looking at this gorgeous, deep, downy sofa, you can guess what the primary brief from the client was – comfort!  The ultimate spot for an indulgent afternoon nap!

Comfort doesn’t come naturally!  It depends on factors like seat (and arm) height and depth, the number and shape of the cushions, the type of cushion inserts, and, of course, and the texture of the fabric.  These decisions need to be made while also considering the aesthetic impact of each choice.

For this sofa, I chose a hardwood (timber) frame with a 10 year warranty (a must for a high-use item!). The arms are low, while the sofa height is medium – allowing enough height for support, but not forcing an upright seated position.  The sofa back is fully upholstered and back and scatter cushions, generously filled with feather and down, provide support as well as pillow-y softness and comfort.

For the ultimate in nap-ability, one single cushion is used for the seat, which gives a mattress effect.  The cushion is filled with foam core for structure, but wrapped in down before being covered in the gorgeously soft fabric – the perfect combination of support and cloud-like comfort.

This sofa takes pride of place in an exquisitely sunlit room with glorious harbour views – I cannot imagine a better place to spend a lazy afternoon!
